| "A has X; B has Y" | "A and B both address X, but their approaches reveal fundamentally different assumptions about Y" |
描述性(较弱): Online classes are asynchronous while in-person classes meet at scheduled times. Online classes use discussion boards while in-person classes use live discussions. Online classes require internet access while in-person classes require physical attendance.
分析性(较强): While both online and in-person education aim to deliver knowledge, their structural differences reveal competing assumptions about how learning happens. In-person education prioritizes real-time interaction, assuming that learning is fundamentally social and benefits from spontaneous exchange. Online education prioritizes flexibility, assuming that learning is fundamentally individual and benefits from self-paced engagement. Neither assumption is entirely correct, which is why the most effective programs increasingly blend elements of both.
|---|---|
| IELTS Task 2 | "Some people prefer X while others prefer Y. Discuss both views and give your opinion." |
| TOEFL Writing | "Compare the advantages and disadvantages of two approaches to [topic]." |
| AP English | "Compare how two authors use [literary technique] to convey their messages." |
| GRE Analytical Writing | "Compare two positions on [issue] and evaluate which is more persuasive." |
目的示例: "Despite their apparent differences, capitalism and socialism both rely on the same fundamental assumption: that economic systems should serve human well-being. Where they disagree is on how to achieve that goal."
目的示例: "While both traditional and progressive education claim to prepare students for the real world, their methods are so fundamentally different that they effectively prepare students for different worlds."
|---|---|
| This essay will compare and contrast online and in-person learning. | Although online and in-person education serve the same goal, their structural differences reflect fundamentally different assumptions about how people learn best. |
| There are many similarities and differences between capitalism and socialism. | While capitalism and socialism share the goal of economic prosperity, their opposing views on individual freedom versus collective welfare make them irreconcilable in practice. |
| Shakespeare and Marlowe were both Elizabethan playwrights. | Shakespeare and Marlowe both revolutionized English drama, but Shakespeare's lasting dominance stems from his ability to create psychologically complex characters, a dimension largely absent from Marlowe's more rhetorically driven works. |
"For students who work full-time, online education is the more practical choice because..."
"Understanding the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes is essential for effective treatment and prevention."
"The contrasting responses of Japan and the United States to the 2008 financial crisis reveal fundamentally different assumptions about the role of government in the economy."
"Renewable energy sources are not only cleaner than fossil fuels but increasingly more cost-effective, making continued investment in fossil fuel infrastructure both environmentally irresponsible and financially unwise."

Introduction (thesis)
Body 1: Point of comparison #1
- Subject A
- Subject B
- Analysis of similarity/difference
Body 2: Point of comparison #2
- Subject A
- Subject B
- Analysis of similarity/difference
Body 3: Point of comparison #3
- Subject A
- Subject B
- Analysis of similarity/difference
Conclusion
Body 1: Flexibility
- Online learning: Students access materials anytime, anywhere
- In-person learning: Fixed schedule requires physical attendance
- Analysis: Online offers significant advantage for working adults
Body 2: Social Interaction
- Online learning: Limited to discussion boards and video calls
- In-person learning: Real-time collaboration, spontaneous conversations
- Analysis: In-person environment fosters deeper peer connections
Body 3: Cost
- Online learning: Lower tuition, no commuting or housing expenses
- In-person learning: Higher tuition plus room, board, and transport
- Analysis: Online is more accessible for students with limited budgets
|---|---|
| 可能显得重复("Subject A does X, Subject B does Y") | 变换句子结构;不要总是先讨论 A 再讨论 B |
Introduction (thesis)
Body 1: Subject A
- Point of comparison #1
- Point of comparison #2
- Point of comparison #3
Body 2: Subject B
- Point of comparison #1
- Point of comparison #2
- Point of comparison #3
Conclusion
Body 1: Online Learning
- Flexibility: Asynchronous, learn anywhere, anytime
- Social interaction: Discussion boards, video calls, limited spontaneity
- Cost: Lower tuition, no housing or commuting expenses
Body 2: In-Person Learning
- Flexibility: Fixed schedule, required physical attendance
- Social interaction: Real-time collaboration, organic peer relationships
- Cost: Higher tuition plus room, board, and transport
Introduction (thesis)
Body 1: Brief overview of Subject A (context, background)
Body 2: Brief overview of Subject B (context, background)
Body 3: Point-by-point comparison on criteria 1 and 2
Body 4: Point-by-point comparison on criteria 3 and 4
Conclusion
Introduction (thesis)
Body 1: Similarities between A and B (block)
Body 2: Key difference #1 (point-by-point)
Body 3: Key difference #2 (point-by-point)
Body 4: Key difference #3 (point-by-point)
Conclusion
Introduction (thesis)
Body 1: Criterion 1 -- A vs. B
Body 2: Criterion 2 -- A vs. B
Body 3: Criterion 3 -- A vs. B
Body 4: Overall evaluation -- which subject is stronger and why
Conclusion
|---|---|---|
| 评价型(其中一个更好) | "While both online and in-person education have merits, in-person learning produces stronger outcomes in engagement, retention, and social development."
| 分析型(比较揭示了某种东西) | "The contrasting educational philosophies behind online and in-person learning reflect a deeper tension between efficiency and human connection."
| 说明型(这些是关键的差异) | "Online and in-person education differ most significantly in three areas: scheduling flexibility, opportunities for social interaction, and overall cost."
| 平衡型(两者各有长处) | "Online learning excels in flexibility and affordability, while in-person learning offers superior social engagement and hands-on experience."
Online vs. in-person learning: flexibility, cost, social interaction, technology requirements, accessibility, instructor quality, learning outcomes, student engagement, credential recognition, pacing, feedback speed, cheating prevention, networking opportunities...
|---|---|
In contrast, Unlike [A], Whereas [A]..., On the other hand, However, By comparison |
Similarly, Like [A], In the same way, [B] also, Both [A] and [B] |
While [A]..., [B]...; Although both..., [B] differs in that...; [A]..., but [B] takes a different approach |
|---|---|
Another key difference, A further point of comparison, Equally important |
While [previous point] favors [A], the reverse is true for... |
Perhaps the most significant difference, The most telling contrast |
Despite these differences, the two subjects share...; However, the similarities are equally striking |
Now I will discuss Subject B."
较强的过渡: "While online learning offers clear advantages in flexibility and cost, in-person education brings its own distinct strengths -- strengths that become apparent when the same criteria are applied to the traditional classroom setting."
A is flexible. B is rigid. A is cheap. B is expensive. A lacks social interaction. B has social interaction.

Online learning is flexible. Students can study whenever they want. They can be at home or anywhere with an internet connection. In-person learning is not flexible. Students have to go to class at a certain time. They have to be physically present. So online learning is more flexible.
One of the most striking differences between online and in-person education is the degree of scheduling flexibility each offers. Online courses are typically asynchronous, allowing students to access lectures, readings, and discussion boards at any hour and from any location with internet access. This model is particularly advantageous for non-traditional students -- working professionals, parents with young children, and individuals in rural areas far from university campuses -- who cannot structure their lives around a fixed class schedule. In-person education, by contrast, operates on a synchronous model: students must be physically present in a specific classroom at a specific time, often two or three times per week. While this fixed schedule provides external structure that some students find motivating, it inherently excludes those who cannot meet rigid attendance requirements. The flexibility gap between the two formats is not trivial. A 2021 survey by the National Center for Education Statistics found that 74% of students who chose online programs cited scheduling flexibility as their primary reason, suggesting that for a large segment of the student population, the ability to learn on their own schedule is not a preference but a necessity.
| 分析 | "So online learning is more flexible"(显而易见) | 解释了谁受益,以及灵活性为什么重要 |
| 比较语言 | "Online is X. In-person is Y."(脱节) | "By contrast"、"While this"、"between the two"(相连) |
Renewable energy is getting cheaper. Solar panels cost less than they used to. Wind energy is also cheap now. Governments give subsidies for renewable energy.
Fossil fuels are expensive. Oil prices go up and down. Coal plants cost a lot to maintain. There are also environmental costs.
The economics of renewable energy have shifted dramatically over the past decade. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, the cost of solar photovoltaic electricity fell by 89% between 2010 and 2022, making it the cheapest source of new electricity generation in most of the world. Wind energy has followed a similar trajectory, with onshore wind costs dropping by 69% over the same period. These reductions are driven by technological improvements, manufacturing scale, and supportive government policies such as tax credits and feed-in tariffs. Crucially, once a solar or wind installation is built, its fuel cost is zero -- the sun and wind are free -- which means operating costs remain low and predictable for the life of the facility.
Fossil fuels, by contrast, face a fundamentally different cost structure. While the upfront construction costs of natural gas and coal plants can be competitive with renewables, their ongoing fuel costs are substantial and volatile. The price of natural gas, for example, nearly tripled in Europe during 2022 due to supply disruptions, sending electricity bills soaring for consumers and businesses alike. Coal plants face mounting maintenance costs as aging infrastructure requires expensive upgrades, and the cost of complying with tightening environmental regulations continues to rise. When externalities are included -- the health costs of air pollution, the economic damage from climate change, and the expense of environmental remediation -- the International Monetary Fund estimates that fossil fuel subsidies and unpriced externalities cost the global economy $5.9 trillion annually. Taken together, the cost comparison between renewables and fossil fuels increasingly favors renewables, not only in upfront price but in long-term economic and environmental sustainability.
Fossil fuels, by contrast, face a fundamentally different cost structure" |
There are many similarities and differences between living in a city and living in the countryside.
While rural living offers peace, space, and affordability, the career opportunities, cultural richness, and social diversity of urban environments make city living the better choice for young professionals building their futures.
The choice between urban and rural living is not simply a matter of personal preference but reflects deeper tensions between economic opportunity and quality of life -- tensions that reveal how housing policy, infrastructure investment, and remote work are reshaping the geography of opportunity.
Urban and rural environments each offer distinct advantages in cost of living, professional opportunity, and lifestyle quality, and the best choice depends not on which is objectively better but on which set of trade-offs aligns with an individual's priorities.
|---|---|
| Both A and B... | Both online and in-person students must complete the same coursework. |
| Like A, B also... | Like traditional classrooms, virtual learning environments require active student participation. |
| A and B share... | Urban and rural communities share a common dependence on reliable infrastructure. |
| Similarly, ... | Solar energy costs have plummeted in the past decade. Similarly, wind energy prices have dropped by more than half. |
| In the same way that A..., B... | In the same way that fossil fuels powered the industrial revolution, renewable energy is driving the green transition. |
| A is comparable to B in... | Online education is comparable to in-person education in academic rigor. |
| Neither A nor B... | Neither approach fully addresses the problem of student motivation. |
| Just as A..., so too B... | Just as the printing press democratized access to knowledge, so too has the internet expanded educational reach. |
|---|---|
| While A..., B... | While online learning prioritizes flexibility, in-person education prioritizes interaction. |
| Unlike A, B... | Unlike fossil fuels, renewable energy sources produce no direct carbon emissions. |
| A..., whereas B... | Solar installations have minimal ongoing costs, whereas coal plants require continuous fuel purchases. |
| In contrast to A, B... | In contrast to the block method, point-by-point organization highlights direct comparisons. |
| A...; however, B... | Online programs offer lower tuition; however, in-person programs provide more networking opportunities. |
| Although A..., B... | Although both systems aim to educate, they differ fundamentally in how they define the student experience. |
| A differs from B in... | Renewable energy differs from fossil fuel energy in its long-term cost trajectory. |
| On the other hand, ... | Urban areas offer diverse job markets. Rural areas, on the other hand, offer lower cost of living and larger living spaces. |
|---|---|
| A is [more/less] [adjective] than B | Online learning is more accessible than in-person education for working adults. |
| A tends to..., while B tends to... | Cities tend to vote progressively, while rural areas tend to vote conservatively. |
| A is somewhat/slightly/significantly... | The cost difference is significant: renewables are now 30-50% cheaper per megawatt-hour. |
| A and B are similar in [X] but differ in [Y] | The two approaches are similar in their goals but differ substantially in their methods. |
| The gap between A and B is [narrowing/widening] | The performance gap between online and in-person students is narrowing as virtual teaching methods improve. |
Both renewable and fossil fuel energy have advantages and disadvantages, so neither is clearly better."
Online learning is flexible. In-person learning has beautiful campuses."
Cars use gas while bicycles use human power."
[Three paragraphs describing online learning] + [Three paragraphs describing in-person learning] + "In conclusion, both have advantages."
Online learning is flexible, affordable, and accessible" [without ever acknowledging its limitations in social engagement or hands-on learning].
[主题句] Perhaps the most significant difference between the two educational formats is their impact on social development. [对象 A 及其论据] In-person education immerses students in a rich social environment where learning extends beyond the curriculum: hallway conversations, study groups forming organically in the library, mentoring relationships that develop through regular face-to-face contact. A 2020 study published in Higher Education Research found that in-person students reported 40% more "meaningful academic relationships" than their online counterparts. [过渡到对象 B] Online students, by contrast, interact primarily through structured channels -- discussion board posts, scheduled video sessions, and email exchanges with instructors. [对象 B 及其论据] While these formats facilitate academic dialogue, they rarely produce the spontaneous, relationship-building interactions that characterize campus life. A survey by the Online Learning Consortium found that 62% of online students cited "feeling isolated" as their biggest challenge. [与论点句相联系的分析] This disparity in social experience is not merely a matter of comfort or preference. Research consistently links strong peer relationships to higher academic persistence, better mental health outcomes, and more robust professional networks after graduation. For students who can attend in person, the social dimension of campus life offers benefits that no virtual platform has yet replicated.
| 比较的语言 | "Both"、"Similarly"、"Like A, B also"、"Just as" |
| 对照的语言 | "While"、"Unlike"、"Whereas"、"In contrast"、"However" |
| 程度的语言 | "More/less than"、"tends to"、"significantly"、"the gap is narrowing" |

|---|---|
| "This essay will compare X and Y." | 说明这个比较揭示了什么:"While X and Y share [similarity], their approaches to [topic] reveal [insight]." |
| "There are many similarities and differences." |
| 每个对照段落都以 "However" 开头 | 变换过渡词:用 "In contrast"、"On the other hand"、"While"、"Whereas"、"Conversely"。 |
| Criterion | Subject A | Subject B | Significance |
|-------------------|------------------------|------------------------|----------------------|
| [Criterion 1] | [Evidence/description] | [Evidence/description] | [What it reveals] |
| [Criterion 2] | [Evidence/description] | [Evidence/description] | [What it reveals] |
| [Criterion 3] | [Evidence/description] | [Evidence/description] | [What it reveals] |
| [Criterion 4] | [Evidence/description] | [Evidence/description] | [What it reveals] |
| Criterion | Online Learning | In-Person Learning | Significance |
|--------------------|-----------------------------|------------------------------|---------------------------------|
| Flexibility | Asynchronous, learn anywhere| Fixed schedule, physical | Access vs. structure trade-off |
| Social interaction | Discussion boards, video | Face-to-face, spontaneous | Depth of relationship building |
| Cost | Lower tuition, no commute | Higher tuition + living costs| Socioeconomic accessibility |
| Learning outcomes | Comparable completion rates | Higher persistence rates | Format matters less than support|
Start here:
|
How long is the essay?
|
+-- Short (300-600 words) --> Block method
| Is one subject more familiar to the reader?
| +-- Yes --> Discuss familiar subject first, then contrast with new subject
| +-- No --> Discuss weaker subject first, stronger subject second
|
+-- Medium (600-1200 words) --> Point-by-point
| How many criteria?
| +-- 2-3 --> One paragraph per criterion
| +-- 4+ --> Group related criteria or use hybrid
|
+-- Long (1200+ words) --> Hybrid
Do subjects need introduction?
+-- Yes --> Block overview + point-by-point analysis
+-- No --> Point-by-point + evaluative synthesis
