|---|---|
| A factory discharges chemicals into a river. | Fish populations in the river decline. |
| The government raises interest rates. | Consumer borrowing decreases. |
| A student studies consistently throughout the semester. | The student earns a high grade on the final exam. |
| A city invests in public transportation. | Traffic congestion decreases over time. |
While the immediate cause of the 2008 financial crisis was the collapse of the subprime mortgage market, the underlying causes were far more complex. Decades of financial deregulation, the proliferation of opaque derivative instruments, and credit rating agencies' failure to accurately assess risk all created the conditions that made a housing market downturn into a global economic catastrophe.
When the factory closed, 400 workers lost their primary source of income. As a result, consumer spending in the town dropped sharply, with local businesses reporting revenue declines of 20 to 30 percent. This drop in revenue forced several businesses to reduce their own workforces, compounding the unemployment problem. With fewer employed residents paying taxes, the town's budget for schools and infrastructure shrank, further reducing the community's ability to attract new businesses or retain young families.
The decline in bee populations is driven by multiple factors: widespread use of neonicotinoid pesticides, loss of habitat due to agricultural expansion, parasitic infections from Varroa mites, and climate change disrupting seasonal flowering patterns. No single factor fully explains the decline — it is the combination that has proved devastating.
The invention of the smartphone transformed daily life in numerous ways. It changed how people communicate, replacing phone calls with text messages and social media. It disrupted entire industries, from newspapers and bookstores to taxis and cameras. It altered social behavior, creating new norms around constant connectivity and screen time. And it introduced new public health concerns, from sleep disruption to increased anxiety among adolescents.
Urbanization in developing countries is driven by agricultural mechanization, rural poverty, and the perception of economic opportunity in cities. These forces together produce effects that are both positive and negative: economic growth and innovation in urban centers, but also overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, environmental degradation, and the erosion of rural communities.
While poverty is a significant contributing factor to crime, it is neither a necessary nor a sufficient cause. Many people living in poverty never commit crimes, and many crimes are committed by people who are not poor. However, the statistical correlation between poverty and certain types of crime is strong enough to warrant serious policy attention.

Introduction + Thesis
Block 1: Causes
- Cause 1 (with explanation and evidence)
- Cause 2 (with explanation and evidence)
- Cause 3 (with explanation and evidence)
Block 2: Effects
- Effect 1 (with explanation and evidence)
- Effect 2 (with explanation and evidence)
- Effect 3 (with explanation and evidence)
Conclusion
These three factors — digital competition, lost advertising revenue, and corporate cost-cutting — did not simply weaken local newspapers. They set off a cascade of consequences that reshaped communities in ways that are still being felt today.
Introduction + Thesis
Step 1: Initial cause → first effect
Step 2: First effect becomes cause → second effect
Step 3: Second effect becomes cause → third effect
Step 4: Third effect becomes cause → final effect
Conclusion
A student stays up late studying (or scrolling social media), reducing sleep to fewer than six hours.
Insufficient sleep impairs the brain's ability to consolidate memories, meaning the material studied the night before is not effectively stored.
Poor memory consolidation leads to difficulty concentrating during the next day's classes, reducing the amount of new information absorbed.
Falling behind on new material creates anxiety, which makes it harder to fall asleep the following night, perpetuating the cycle.
Over weeks, the accumulating sleep debt and academic gaps result in significantly lower exam scores and overall course performance.
Because students are sleeping fewer hours, their brains cannot effectively consolidate the information they studied. This failure of memory consolidation means that the next day's lecture builds on material that was never properly absorbed. As a result, students fall progressively further behind, which generates anxiety that further disrupts their sleep.
注意,每个句子都以一个表示因果的连接语开头或包含一个这样的连接语("because"、"this failure means that"、"as a result"、"which generates")。
Introduction + Thesis
Paragraph 1: Cause A → Effect A
Paragraph 2: Cause B → Effect B
Paragraph 3: Cause C → Effect C
Conclusion
Increased construction and paving (cause) leads to the "urban heat island" effect, where cities are several degrees warmer than surrounding rural areas (effect).
Concentrated vehicle traffic and industrial activity (cause) produces elevated levels of air pollution, including particulate matter and ground-level ozone (effect).
Expansion of impervious surfaces like concrete and asphalt (cause) prevents rainwater from being absorbed into the ground, increasing the frequency and severity of urban flooding (effect).
While limited parking and high fuel costs encourage some commuters to use public transit, the most significant factor driving ridership increases is the introduction of reliable, frequent service with short wait times.
The decline of the Roman Empire resulted from a series of compounding pressures that built over centuries: the overextension of military campaigns in the second century, the economic strain of maintaining distant borders in the third century, the political instability of rapid emperor succession in the fourth century, and finally the inability to repel barbarian invasions in the fifth century.
The causes of the French Revolution can be understood in three dimensions: the economic crisis created by war debts and regressive taxation, the social resentment fueled by extreme inequality between the aristocracy and the common people, and the political failure of the monarchy to implement meaningful reform.
The shortage of affordable housing in major cities is driven by three interconnected factors: restrictive zoning laws that limit new construction, speculative investment that inflates property values, and the failure of federal housing subsidies to keep pace with rising costs.
The widespread adoption of smartphones has fundamentally altered social interaction, creating new forms of communication but also contributing to increased social isolation, shortened attention spans, and a decline in face-to-face conversation skills.
Decades of industrial agriculture, driven by the demand for cheap food and enabled by government subsidies, have degraded soil quality across the American Midwest, leading to decreased crop yields, increased dependence on chemical fertilizers, and the contamination of waterways feeding into the Gulf of Mexico.
Block 1: Causes (organized by importance)
- Cause 1
- Cause 2
- Cause 3
Block 2: Effects (organized as a chain)
- These causes led to Effect A
- Effect A triggered Effect B
- Effect B resulted in Effect C

Video games cause violence in young people. Studies show that children who play violent video games are more aggressive. Therefore, violent video games should be banned.
The relationship between violent video games and aggressive behavior in young people is more complex than popular media suggests. While several studies, including a 2015 meta-analysis by the American Psychological Association, found a small but consistent correlation between playing violent games and increased aggressive thoughts, the research does not establish that games directly cause violent behavior. Children who exhibit aggressive tendencies may be more attracted to violent games in the first place — a phenomenon researchers call self-selection bias. Furthermore, countries like Japan and South Korea, where video game consumption is among the highest in the world, have some of the lowest rates of violent crime. This suggests that cultural, economic, and social factors play a far larger role in determining violent behavior than media consumption alone.

Deforestation causes flooding. When trees are cut down, floods happen. Governments should stop deforestation to prevent flooding.
Deforestation significantly increases the risk of flooding through a chain of environmental effects. Trees play a critical role in the water cycle: their root systems absorb rainfall and hold soil in place, while their canopy slows the rate at which rain reaches the ground. When large areas of forest are cleared, this natural water management system is eliminated. Rainwater runs directly off the exposed soil surface, carrying topsoil with it into streams and rivers. Over time, this sediment accumulates on riverbeds, reducing the channels' capacity to hold water. When heavy rains arrive — rains that the forest would have absorbed — the diminished rivers overflow their banks. This process explains why regions that have experienced rapid deforestation, such as the highlands of Haiti and parts of Borneo, suffer flooding at rates far higher than neighboring forested areas with similar rainfall patterns.
The obesity epidemic is caused by fast food. Fast food restaurants serve unhealthy food with too many calories. If people stopped eating fast food, obesity would decrease.
The rise in obesity rates across developed countries over the past four decades cannot be attributed to any single cause. The proliferation of fast food restaurants has certainly played a role, as these establishments serve calorie-dense meals with portions that have grown significantly since the 1980s. However, fast food is only one factor among many. Sedentary lifestyles have become the norm as desk-based work has replaced physical labor and screen-based entertainment has replaced outdoor recreation. Food deserts in low-income neighborhoods limit access to affordable fresh produce, pushing residents toward processed and packaged alternatives. Agricultural subsidies for corn and soy have made processed ingredients like high-fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils artificially cheap, encouraging food manufacturers to use them heavily. Marketing budgets for unhealthy foods dwarf those for fruits and vegetables by a ratio of roughly 25 to 1. And genetic predispositions mean that some individuals are more susceptible to weight gain than others under identical dietary conditions. Addressing obesity effectively requires acknowledging this web of causes rather than focusing on any single culprit.
After the new principal arrived, test scores at the school increased by 15%. The new principal clearly caused the improvement in student performance.
Test scores at Lincoln High School rose by 15% in the two years following the appointment of a new principal. While it is tempting to attribute this improvement directly to the new leadership, a careful analysis reveals a more complicated picture. The score increase coincided with several other changes: the district implemented a new math curriculum, the school received a federal grant that funded additional tutoring staff, and several experienced teachers who had planned to retire chose to stay on for an additional year. The new principal may have contributed to the improvement through policy decisions and a shift in school culture, but isolating her effect from these other factors is difficult. Attributing the entire 15% gain to a single change in leadership oversimplifies a situation where multiple initiatives were producing results simultaneously.
I wore my lucky socks and we won the game. My socks caused us to win.
Crime rates dropped after the city installed new streetlights. Therefore, the streetlights reduced crime.
Countries with higher chocolate consumption have more Nobel Prize winners. Therefore, eating chocolate helps people win Nobel Prizes.
Students who eat breakfast earn higher grades. Therefore, eating breakfast causes better academic performance.
The team lost because the goalkeeper made an error.
Poverty is caused by a lack of education.
If we allow students to use calculators in math class, they will never learn to do math by hand, and eventually no one will understand mathematics at all.
If the government regulates one industry, it will soon regulate all industries, leading to a completely state-controlled economy.
Either violent video games are causing youth violence, or they have absolutely no effect at all.
The economic downturn was caused either by government overspending or by corporate greed.
Successful people read a lot. Therefore, reading causes success.
Countries with strong economies have better healthcare. Therefore, good healthcare causes economic growth.

Social media causes depression in teenagers.
A longitudinal study published in JAMA Pediatrics in 2019 found that adolescents who spent more than three hours per day on social media had twice the risk of developing symptoms of depression, suggesting a significant association between heavy social media use and adolescent mental health.
Pollution affects the environment.
Nitrogen runoff from agricultural fertilizers causes algal blooms in freshwater lakes, which deplete oxygen levels and kill fish populations — a process known as eutrophication.
After the company hired a new CEO, profits increased. The new CEO was responsible for the profit increase.
Profits increased following the appointment of a new CEO. While the new CEO implemented several cost-reduction measures that likely contributed to the improvement, the profit increase also coincided with a broader industry recovery and the launch of a product that had been in development for three years before her arrival. Isolating her specific impact requires controlling for these other factors.
The reason students fail is that they are lazy.
Students underperform for a variety of reasons, including inadequate preparation in earlier grades, difficult home environments, learning disabilities that go undiagnosed, and, in some cases, insufficient motivation. Attributing failure to a single character trait ignores the systemic factors that research has consistently identified as more significant predictors of academic outcomes.
Raising the minimum wage causes unemployment. Higher labor costs force businesses to cut jobs.
Critics of minimum wage increases argue that higher labor costs force businesses to cut jobs. However, empirical evidence on this point is mixed. A landmark study by economists David Card and Alan Krueger found that a minimum wage increase in New Jersey did not reduce employment in the fast-food industry compared to neighboring Pennsylvania. More recent research suggests that moderate minimum wage increases may reduce turnover costs and boost productivity enough to offset higher wages. The causal relationship between minimum wages and employment is far more complex than a simple supply-and-demand model would predict.
Countries with more cell phones have higher GDP. Cell phones cause economic growth.
There is a strong positive correlation between cell phone adoption and GDP across countries. However, this correlation does not prove that cell phones drive economic growth. Wealthier countries can afford more cell phones, and both variables may be influenced by underlying factors such as infrastructure quality, education levels, and governance. That said, targeted studies in developing countries have shown that mobile phone access enables farmers to check market prices and reduces information asymmetry, suggesting that mobile technology does contribute to economic activity in specific, measurable ways.
|---|---|
| 有力的论据证明直接因果 | causes, produces, results in, leads directly to |
| 充分的论据证明有促成作用 | contributes to, is a major factor in, plays a significant role in |
| 中等的论据证明有关联 | is associated with, is linked to, correlates with |
| 有限或不确定的论据 | may contribute to, appears to influence, has been suggested as a factor |
| 承认复杂性 | is one of several factors, interacts with other variables to produce |
