像 "Pollution is bad" 这样的主张太笼统;而 "Industrial water pollution in the Great Lakes region requires stricter EPA enforcement because voluntary compliance programs have failed to reduce contamination levels over the past decade" 就足够具体,可以有效展开论证。
Renewable energy jobs grew 12% in 2023." |
According to Dr. Hansen, climate models underestimate polar ice loss." |
A randomized trial found that meditation reduced anxiety scores by 30%." |
The New Deal demonstrated that government spending can stimulate recovery." |
Just as seat belt laws reduced traffic fatalities, helmet laws would reduce cycling deaths." |
In Chapter 3, the author states that 'progress requires sacrifice.'" |
"Universities should eliminate standardized test requirements for admissions."
"Research from the University of Chicago found that high school GPA is a stronger predictor of college success than SAT scores. Additionally, studies show that standardized tests correlate more strongly with family income than with academic ability."
"If the primary purpose of admissions testing is to predict college success, and GPA predicts success more accurately than standardized tests, then the tests are not serving their intended purpose. Furthermore, if the tests primarily measure socioeconomic background rather than potential, they undermine the goal of equitable access to education."
"The principle that admissions criteria should predict actual performance, not socioeconomic status, is reflected in the mission statements of most major universities and in federal civil rights guidance on educational access."
"In most cases..." / "For the majority of applicants..." / "The evidence strongly suggests..."
"Critics argue that eliminating standardized tests would make it harder to compare applicants from different schools. However, holistic review processes that consider GPA in context — accounting for school rigor, course selection, and extracurricular involvement — provide a more complete picture of each applicant than a single test score."
Cities should invest in urban green spaces.
A 2022 meta-analysis of 47 studies found that residents living within 300 meters of green spaces reported 20% lower rates of depression and anxiety. Emergency room visits for heat-related illness were 35% lower in neighborhoods with tree canopy coverage above 30%.
Public health outcomes should be a primary consideration in urban planning decisions, and interventions that demonstrably improve mental and physical health justify public investment.
The World Health Organization recommends that cities allocate a minimum of 9 square meters of green space per resident, recognizing the direct link between urban greenery and population health.
While the strength of these effects varies by climate and population density, the overall trend is consistent across geographic regions.
Some argue that green space investment diverts funds from more urgent infrastructure needs. However, studies show that every dollar invested in urban green space returns $4 in reduced healthcare costs and increased property values, making it one of the most cost-effective public health interventions available.
|---|---|
| "Social media is harmful to teenagers." | "Social media platforms that use algorithmic content curation increase anxiety in teenagers because the algorithms prioritize emotionally provocative content, which studies have linked to heightened stress responses in adolescent brains." |
| "Education funding should increase." | "Increasing per-pupil education spending by $1,000 has been shown to improve graduation rates by 7% in low-income districts, according to a 2023 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, demonstrating that targeted funding directly improves outcomes." |
| "Exercise is good for you." | "Regular aerobic exercise should be incorporated into workplace wellness programs because a Stanford meta-analysis found that employees who exercise 150 minutes per week take 40% fewer sick days, reducing absenteeism costs by an average of $2,500 per employee annually." |

Lots of people think climate change is a problem."
诉诸人格较强: "The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Sixth Assessment Report, synthesizing over 14,000 scientific papers, concludes with high confidence that human activities have warmed the planet by approximately 1.1 degrees Celsius since the pre-industrial period."
Anyone who disagrees with renewable energy is simply wrong."
诉诸人格较强: "While renewable energy presents challenges related to intermittency and storage, the rapid decline in battery costs — down 89% since 2010 — is addressing these limitations faster than most projections anticipated."
This policy is totally insane and everyone knows it."
诉诸人格较强: "This policy has drawn criticism from economists across the political spectrum, with analyses from both the Brookings Institution and the Heritage Foundation identifying significant implementation flaws."
Poverty affects many children's educational outcomes."
具体: "A ten-year-old in rural Appalachia walks two miles to school each morning without breakfast, sits in a classroom where the heating system has not worked since last winter, and returns home to a house without internet access to complete homework assignments that require online research."
"Maria arrived in the United States at age fourteen, speaking no English. Her family had fled violence in Guatemala, leaving behind everything they owned. Within three years, she was valedictorian of her high school class. Stories like Maria's are not exceptional — they are representative of the resilience and contribution that immigrant families bring to American communities."
"Every child deserves the chance to learn in a safe, well-equipped classroom. This is not a partisan position — it is a reflection of the most basic commitment any society makes to its future."
"If we would not accept these conditions for our own children, why do we accept them for children in underfunded districts?"
Renewable energy is important. Some countries use nuclear power. Solar panels have gotten cheaper. We should invest in clean energy because pollution is bad."
诉诸逻辑较强: "The cost of solar energy has declined 89% since 2010, making it cheaper than coal in most markets. As a result, countries that invest in solar infrastructure now will benefit from both lower energy costs and reduced carbon emissions over the next two decades."
"Critics of universal healthcare argue that it would increase government spending. However, a 2020 analysis by the Congressional Budget Office found that a single-payer system would reduce total national healthcare expenditure by $650 billion over ten years by eliminating administrative overhead and enabling government negotiation of drug prices."
诉诸人格: "Research published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics found a direct correlation between teacher compensation and student outcomes, a finding supported by the National Academy of Sciences."
诉诸逻辑: "Districts that raised starting teacher salaries by 10% saw a 25% increase in qualified applicants within two years. Higher applicant pools allow districts to hire more effective teachers, which in turn improves student test scores by an average of 5 percentile points."
诉诸情感: "In many communities, the people we trust with shaping our children's futures earn less than entry-level workers in industries that require no specialized training. A teacher with a master's degree and ten years of experience should not need a second job to pay rent."

Premise 1 (General principle): All X have property Y.
Premise 2 (Specific case): Z is an X.
Conclusion: Therefore, Z has property Y.
Premise 1: All mammals are warm-blooded. Premise 2: Dolphins are mammals. Conclusion: Therefore, dolphins are warm-blooded.
If the primary purpose of a criminal justice system is to reduce crime (Premise 1), and if rehabilitation programs reduce recidivism rates more effectively than incarceration alone (Premise 2), then the criminal justice system should prioritize rehabilitation over punishment (Conclusion).
Observation 1: Case A shows pattern P.
Observation 2: Case B shows pattern P.
Observation 3: Case C shows pattern P.
Conclusion: Therefore, pattern P is likely general.
Observation 1: Cities that invested in bike infrastructure saw a 15-25% reduction in traffic congestion. Observation 2: Studies in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Portland all show similar results. Observation 3: A meta-analysis of 30 cities confirmed the pattern. Conclusion: Investing in bike infrastructure is likely to reduce traffic congestion.
Studies from Finland, South Korea, and Canada show that shorter school days with more recess time correlate with higher academic achievement. In Finland, students consistently outperform their peers in countries with longer school days on international assessments. South Korea's recent reforms reducing classroom hours led to improved student well-being without declining test scores. Canada's provinces that increased recess time saw improvements in both behavior and academic focus. Taken together, this evidence suggests that reducing instructional hours and increasing unstructured play time may actually improve, rather than harm, academic outcomes.
Situation A has properties 1, 2, 3, and outcome X.
Situation B has properties 1, 2, and 3.
Conclusion: Situation B will likely also have outcome X.
When the United Kingdom implemented a sugar tax on beverages in 2018, consumption of sugary drinks fell by 10% within two years. Mexico, which implemented a similar tax in 2014, saw an even larger reduction of 12%. Given these results, it is reasonable to expect that a sugar tax in the United States would similarly reduce sugary drink consumption.
The regulation of social media companies can be compared to the regulation of the tobacco industry in the 1990s. In both cases, a profitable industry initially resisted evidence that its products caused harm, particularly to young people. In both cases, the industry argued that regulation would destroy innovation and economic growth. The tobacco industry's predictions proved wrong — regulation reduced smoking rates while the industry remained profitable. This precedent suggests that social media regulation could similarly protect public health without destroying the platforms themselves.
1. Introduction + Thesis
2. Supporting argument 1 + evidence
3. Supporting argument 2 + evidence
4. Supporting argument 3 + evidence
5. Counterargument + rebuttal
6. Conclusion
1. Introduction: present the issue fairly
2. Opposing position: state it accurately and respectfully
3. Common ground: identify where both sides agree
4. Your position: present it as addressing concerns from both sides
5. Benefits: show how your position serves shared interests
6. Conclusion
1. Introduction: define the problem
2. Analysis: explain causes and consequences
3. Proposed solution
4. Evidence that the solution works
5. Address objections to the solution
6. Conclusion
1. Introduction: state the opposing position
2. Counterargument 1: present and refute
3. Counterargument 2: present and refute
4. Counterargument 3: present and refute
5. Your positive argument
6. Conclusion

Dr. Smith's research on climate change cannot be trusted because she received a speeding ticket last year."
Dr. Smith's climate research relies on a dataset that has been criticized for excluding satellite temperature measurements from the southern hemisphere, which may bias her conclusions."
We should invest more in public transportation to reduce traffic congestion."
My opponent wants to ban all cars and force everyone onto buses."
Should the city council approve funding for a new community center?"
We should be talking about the potholes on Main Street instead."
Millions of people use this supplement, so it must be effective."
Clinical trials published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that this supplement reduced inflammation markers by 15% over a 12-week period."
A famous basketball player endorses this investment strategy, so it must be sound."
正当的诉诸权威: "Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman has argued that fiscal stimulus is effective during recessions."
Either we ban all social media for teenagers, or we accept that an entire generation will suffer from mental health crises."
修改后: "The challenge is finding the right balance between access and protection. Options range from outright bans to age verification requirements to mandating algorithmic transparency, each with different trade-offs."
谬误示例: "If we allow students to use calculators in math class, they will never learn to do arithmetic, they will become dependent on technology for every decision, and eventually society will lose the ability to think critically."
Increased antibiotic use leads to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which makes infections harder to treat" 就不是滑坡谬误,因为链条上的每一环都有证据支撑。
This book is a bestseller because it is very popular."
另一个例子: "Freedom of speech is important because people should be allowed to express their opinions freely."
I met two people from that country who were rude. People from that country are rude."
My limited interactions do not provide enough information to make any generalizations about the people of an entire country."
The city installed new street lights in January. Crime dropped in February. Therefore, the new street lights reduced crime."
修改后: "While the crime reduction coincided with the installation of new street lights, a controlled study comparing similar neighborhoods with and without new lighting would be needed to establish a causal relationship."
Both sides have valid points. Some scientists say climate change is human-caused, and some say it is not. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle."
When did you stop caring about the environment?"
This medicine is made from natural herbs, so it must be safe and effective."
We have always taught grammar through rote memorization. There is no reason to change our methods."
If you do not support this surveillance program, the next terrorist attack will be on your conscience."
The student should receive a passing grade because her grandmother recently passed away."
"always"、"never"、"everyone"、"no one" 这类词几乎总是说过头了。

School uniforms should be mandatory. They make schools look better and reduce bullying. Students should not have to worry about clothes. Many schools around the world use uniforms, so it obviously works. Anyone who disagrees just wants kids to be distracted by fashion.
| 诉诸大众 | "Many schools use them, so it works" ——流行并不能证明有效 |
| 人身攻击 | "Anyone who disagrees just wants kids to be distracted" ——攻击反对者,而不是回应他们的论点 |

Public schools serving low-income communities should adopt mandatory uniform policies because uniforms reduce visible socioeconomic disparities that contribute to peer exclusion and bullying. A 2019 study published in the International Journal of Educational Management found that schools implementing uniform policies reported a 23% decrease in bullying incidents related to clothing and appearance within two years of adoption. The mechanism is straightforward: when all students wear the same clothing, the economic gap between families becomes less visible in the school environment, reducing one of the most common triggers for peer harassment.
Critics argue that mandatory uniforms restrict students' freedom of expression. This is a legitimate concern, and self-expression is an important developmental need for adolescents. However, expression through clothing is only one form of self-expression, and students retain the ability to express themselves through extracurricular activities, creative work, and personal interactions. The question is one of trade-offs: does the benefit of reduced socioeconomic stigma outweigh the cost of limited clothing choice during school hours? For schools where economic disparity is a documented source of student distress, the evidence suggests that it does.

Social media is bad for democracy. People only see things they agree with, which creates echo chambers. This is a huge problem because it means nobody listens to the other side anymore. Clearly, social media companies need to fix this.

Algorithmic content curation on major social media platforms poses a measurable threat to informed democratic participation by systematically reinforcing users' existing beliefs at the expense of exposure to diverse perspectives. Research from the MIT Media Lab has shown that false information spreads six times faster than accurate information on social media, and a 2021 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that users who are exposed to opposing viewpoints on social media actually become more polarized, not less — suggesting that the problem extends beyond simple lack of exposure to the way platforms structure engagement with opposing content.
The democratic concern is specific: when citizens form political opinions based on algorithmically curated information streams that prioritize engagement over accuracy, the shared factual foundation that democratic deliberation requires begins to erode. This does not mean that social media is inherently incompatible with democracy, nor that all platform effects are negative. Social media has also enabled grassroots political organization, increased voter registration, and given voice to previously marginalized communities. The challenge is not to eliminate social media but to address the specific mechanisms — algorithmic amplification of emotionally provocative content, engagement-maximizing recommendation systems, and the absence of friction for sharing unverified claims — that undermine the quality of democratic discourse.

Some people say that raising the minimum wage will cause businesses to lay off workers. This is wrong. Raising the minimum wage is the right thing to do because workers deserve a living wage.
The most common objection to raising the minimum wage is that it will lead to job losses as businesses reduce staff to offset higher labor costs. This concern has theoretical support in basic supply-and-demand models: if the price of labor increases, demand for labor should decrease. However, empirical evidence has not consistently supported this prediction. A landmark 1994 study by economists David Card and Alan Krueger compared employment at fast-food restaurants in New Jersey (which raised its minimum wage) and neighboring Pennsylvania (which did not) and found no significant reduction in employment. More recently, a 2021 review by the Congressional Budget Office estimated that a federal $15 minimum wage would cost 1.4 million jobs but would also lift 900,000 people out of poverty — a trade-off that requires weighing job losses against poverty reduction rather than dismissing either side of the equation.
Every day, thousands of elderly people sit alone in nursing homes with no visitors, no companionship, and no hope. Their eyes reflect years of loneliness and abandonment. As a society, we should be ashamed of how we treat our most vulnerable citizens. We must do better.
Social isolation among elderly adults is not merely an emotional concern — it is a public health crisis with measurable consequences. A meta-analysis published in Perspectives on Psychological Science found that chronic social isolation increases the risk of premature death by 26%, making it comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes per day as a mortality risk factor. The economic costs are equally stark: isolated elderly adults visit emergency rooms 57% more often than their socially connected peers, contributing an estimated $6.7 billion annually to Medicare spending on preventable hospitalizations.
Behind these statistics are real people. Consider Margaret, an 82-year-old widow living alone in a subsidized apartment. After her husband died, her social world contracted to a weekly phone call with her daughter and occasional encounters with a home health aide. Within a year, she had been hospitalized twice for falls that might have been prevented had someone been checking on her regularly. Margaret's story is not unusual — it is typical of the 14 million Americans over 65 who live alone.
Community-based programs that pair elderly residents with regular volunteer visitors have demonstrated remarkable effectiveness. The "Friendly Visitor" program in Portland, Oregon, reduced emergency room visits among participants by 34% and decreased self-reported loneliness scores by 40% within six months, at a cost of just $180 per participant per year. Scaling such programs nationally would require modest public investment but would yield substantial returns in both human well-being and reduced healthcare costs.
Everyone agrees that standardized testing is a broken system. Tests like the SAT only measure how well someone takes tests, not real intelligence. Students who score well are just good at memorizing facts. If we keep using these tests, we will create a generation of robots who cannot think for themselves. The people who defend standardized testing are usually the ones who profited from test prep companies.

Standardized testing has drawn increasing criticism from educators and researchers who question whether these assessments accurately predict academic success. While SAT scores do correlate with first-year college GPA, the correlation is weaker than that of high school GPA, raising questions about the test's value as an admissions tool. A 2020 study by the University of California system found that high school GPA predicted college success more accurately than SAT scores across all demographic groups, with the SAT adding only marginal predictive value. Defenders of standardized testing argue that the tests provide a common metric for comparing students from different schools with different grading standards — a legitimate concern. However, the growing body of evidence suggesting that GPA is a superior predictor has led over 1,800 colleges to adopt test-optional policies, allowing a natural experiment that will help resolve this debate with data rather than ideology.

[Claim]. [Evidence source] found that [specific finding]. This is significant because [reasoning that connects evidence to claim].
例:
Early childhood education programs should receive increased federal funding. A longitudinal study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that children who attended high-quality preschool programs earned 25% more as adults and were 28% less likely to be incarcerated. This is significant because the long-term economic returns — estimated at $7 for every $1 invested — far exceed the initial cost, making early childhood education one of the most cost-effective social investments available.
Critics argue that [opposing position], and this concern is [valid/understandable/worth considering]. However, [evidence or reasoning that addresses the concern] suggests that [your position] because [explanation].
例:
Critics argue that a four-day work week would reduce productivity, and this concern is understandable given traditional assumptions about the relationship between hours worked and output. However, a 2022 pilot program involving 61 UK companies found that revenue remained stable or increased at 95% of participating firms, while employee well-being improved significantly. This suggests that productivity is driven more by focus and engagement than by raw hours, and that a four-day structure may actually enhance output per hour.
The situation with [your topic] parallels [analogous situation]. In [analogous situation], [what happened]. The relevant similarities — [similarity 1], [similarity 2], and [similarity 3] — suggest that [conclusion about your topic]. While the analogy is not perfect ([key difference]), the core dynamic of [shared mechanism] makes this comparison instructive.
例:
The current debate over regulating artificial intelligence parallels the early regulation of the automotive industry. When cars first became widely available, there were no speed limits, no safety standards, and no licensing requirements. The resulting toll of injuries and deaths eventually forced governments to implement regulations that the industry initially resisted but that ultimately made cars safer and more widely trusted. The relevant similarities — a transformative technology, initial industry resistance to regulation, and clear evidence of public harm from unregulated use — suggest that AI regulation, far from stifling innovation, may be necessary to build the public trust on which long-term adoption depends. While the analogy is not perfect — AI's risks are less physically visible than car crashes — the core dynamic of an unregulated technology causing preventable harm makes this comparison instructive.
[Problem statement with evidence of its scope and impact]. The root cause of this problem is [cause], which means that [surface-level solutions] are unlikely to be effective. Instead, [proposed solution] addresses the underlying cause by [mechanism]. Evidence from [source] shows that [evidence of the solution's effectiveness].
例:
Food insecurity affects 44 million Americans, including 13 million children, according to the USDA's 2023 household survey. The root cause of this problem is not insufficient food production — the United States produces enough food to feed its population twice over — but inadequate distribution and affordability barriers, which means that simply increasing agricultural output is unlikely to reduce hunger. Instead, expanding SNAP benefits and investing in community food distribution networks addresses the underlying cause by putting food within financial and physical reach of those who need it. Evidence from a 2021 analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities shows that every $5 increase in monthly SNAP benefits reduces food insecurity by 12% among participating households.
[Issue] has generated significant debate, with thoughtful arguments on both sides. Those who support [position A] argue that [strongest version of position A], and this perspective has merit because [genuine acknowledgment]. Those who support [position B] counter that [strongest version of position B]. Both sides share a commitment to [common value]. This essay argues that [your nuanced position], which honors [common value] while addressing [specific concern].
例:
The role of standardized testing in college admissions has generated significant debate, with thoughtful arguments on both sides. Those who support maintaining test requirements argue that standardized scores provide an objective metric for comparing applicants from schools with different grading standards, and this perspective has merit because grade inflation has made GPA alone an increasingly unreliable indicator. Those who favor test-optional policies counter that standardized tests correlate more strongly with socioeconomic background than with academic potential. Both sides share a commitment to fair, accurate admissions processes. This essay argues that a test-optional approach with holistic review best serves this shared goal, allowing students who benefit from testing to submit scores while removing a barrier that has historically disadvantaged low-income applicants.
